Sunset at Ponta da Atalaia, just a couple of minutes from our place

I recently had an open chat with a potential guest who was looking to book a stay with us. They mentioned they had found a similar-sized property down around Faro for a much cheaper price, and they wondered why our rates were higher.

It’s a completely fair question. When you look at a map of Portugal from a distance, it’s easy to lump the entire Algarve into one single category. But the wild West Coast up here in Aljezur is an entirely different experience compared to the high-density south coast.

As homeowners who care deeply about this region, we wanted to share a practical look at why a holiday in Vale da Telha carries a different value, and what goes into running our property here.

1. Living Inside a Protected Natural Park

Vale da Telha is located within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Because this is a strictly protected conservation area, you won't find the massive high-rise hotels, sprawling apartment complexes, or noisy nightlife strips common in the southern resort towns.

The building regulations here are incredibly strict to protect the local wildlife and endemic flora. This keeps the population density very low. When you book a stay here, you aren't just renting a standard holiday apartment; you are choosing a quiet retreat inside a protected natural sanctuary where nature is still the main focus.

2. The Value of Space and Silence

The south coast of the Algarve is generally built for high-volume tourism. The West Coast is built for breathing room. Even during the peak of the high summer season, the lifestyle here offers a different pace:

  • Pristine Beaches without the Crowds: While southern resort beaches can get packed towel-to-towel, you can step out of our gate and take a peaceful 15-to-25-minute walk to dramatic clifftops and secluded, wild sands like Praia do Medo da Fonte Santa or Pipa.

  • True Tranquility: The evening soundtrack here isn't traffic or loud bars; it's just the fresh Atlantic breeze and the sound of the ocean.

3. The Surf Premium: The "Ski-In, Ski-Out" of the Coast

Our location brings another major factor into play: world-class waves. Praia da Arrifana is undoubtedly one of the absolute best beaches in Portugal to learn how to surf. Because it is such a premier destination for the surf community, the demand for this specific pocket of the coast is incredibly high.

Staying this close to Arrifana, Monte Clérigo, and Amoreira is the coastal equivalent of renting a ski-in, ski-out chalet in the Alps. You are paying for immediate, effortless access to exceptional surf conditions, which is exactly what so many travelers come here to experience.

4. The Practical Reality of Sustainable Care and Local Costs

Running a high-quality property inside a remote, low-density natural park involves practical realities that are very different from managing a flat in a city center like Faro. Because real estate is expensive here, it drives up the cost of everything else—especially labor and supplies.

  • The Labor Premium: To give you a concrete example, hiring labor for plastering or wall repair work in the north of Portugal might cost around €70 a day. Up here in Aljezur, that same work costs at least 140€ a day.

  • Remote Logistics: Basic supply chains don't exist here. For almost any property maintenance materials or specialized goods we need to buy, we have to drive all the way down to Lagos on the south coast.

  • The Local Cost of Living: Even everyday essentials are costlier. We have only one supermarket in the immediate area, which is notoriously expensive and has actually ranked in the top three most expensive supermarkets in all of Portugal multiple years in a row.

To offset these remote infrastructure limitations and protect the local ecosystem, we have personally invested heavily in making our 1,800m² estate sustainable. Yucca Garden operates as an energy-positive property using an integrated solar panel and battery system, and our gardens are maintained using solar-pumped phreatic water. Doing things right in this region simply requires higher baseline operational care.

5. A Short, Wild Peak Season vs. Year-Round Urban Sprawl

The timing of the rental season also dictates our seasonal pricing. On the south coast, tourism sprawls almost year-round because those areas are essentially urban city centers with a beach attached, offering constant nightlife, massive shopping malls, and golf courses.

Up here on the West Coast, our calendar is closely tied to the shifting rhythms of nature:

  • The Prime Window: Our best beach weather, abundant sunshine, and comfortable water temperatures are highly concentrated between May and September.

  • The Winter Rhythm: From November until March, we shift into a milder, wetter winter season. It is a standard Mediterranean pattern with plenty of clear, crisp days, but we do get occasional storm systems rolling in off the Atlantic. Because our property sits just 1 kilometer from the shore, you can really experience the raw, untamed energy of the ocean during these months.

  • Wild Ocean Conditions: You don't see massive 6-meter waves crashing onto the sheltered south coast, but we get them regularly up here in the winter. During these fall and winter periods, there are long stretches where the Atlantic becomes magnificent to watch from the cliffs, but is simply too wild for swimming, casual fishing, or beginner surf sessions.

Because people visit Aljezur primarily to experience pristine nature, these seasonal sea conditions naturally compress our active rental window into a much shorter, highly concentrated high season. Because we have a narrower frame to make property operations sustainable for the entire year, our peak summer rates reflect that concentration. We aren't running a 365-day city hotel; we are maintaining a seasonal sanctuary.

The Verdict: A Different Kind of Holiday

If you are looking for an economical, high-volume vacation with cheap public transit, standard city conveniences on every corner, and busy souvenir stalls, the south coast of Algarve will always win on price.

But if you want to wake up to peaceful garden views, breathe the fresh Atlantic mist, drive just 5 to 9 minutes to world-class surf breaks like Arrifana, Monte Clérigo, or Amoreira, and retreat to a quiet, spacious estate at the end of the day—Aljezur is irreplaceable.

We always price our Lodge and Villa to honestly reflect the genuine value of this unique environment and the care we put into maintaining our spaces. It really is a different experience, and we believe it’s worth every bit of it.

Kind regards,

Kinga & Miguel YuccaGarden.pt
